On Route 50 in Upperville, the Market Season Hands Off to the Show Ring Overnight

Three addresses on John S. Mosby Highway hold most of what happens in Upperville this month. Salem Farm Showgrounds is at 8300. Buchanan Hall is at 8549. Hunter's Head Tavern is at 9048. On the evening of Wednesday, October 14, the Buchanan Hall Community Market closes its season at 7:30. At 8 the next morning, the first hunter and jumper classes of the WIHS Regional Horse Show start at Salem Farm.

That gap is a little over twelve hours. Across it, the same stretch of road goes from a lawn-chair market with a local vendor list to the final regional gate before the 68th Washington International Horse Show. The International opens in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, on October 19, the day after Upperville's show ends.

Two Wednesdays Left at Buchanan Hall

The Buchanan Hall Community Market is finishing its sixth season. It runs Wednesdays from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., rain or shine, and is family and pet friendly. Two dates remain: October 7 and October 14.

The calendar shapes what those two evenings look like. The market's Big Bazaar Day, with extra vendors and food trucks, falls on the third Wednesday of each month. This October, the third Wednesday is October 21, a week after the season ends. That makes September 16 the last Big Bazaar of 2026, and the two October markets will be regular weeks.

October 7 is the first Wednesday of the month, which means a free Oak Spring Garden Foundation Youth Day. This month's topic is "Seed Saving & Heirlooms." It's the last of the foundation's market sessions this year, following June's microgreens and August's plant pigments and dye.

The market's roster of regulars includes:

  • Wine and pantry: Slater Run Vineyards, Bad Ass Pickles, Christina's Hot Sauce, Jimmy's Hatch Peper Salsa, Sweet Beez, We Must Be Nuts!
  • Dinner and baked goods: All About That Loaf, Logan's Crabs & Seafood, My Empanadas, Taqueria La Mexicana, La Bori, C & E Catering, Little Pink Truck, Dream Cream Ice Cream Truck
  • Makers: Monkeytown Pottery, Rural Squirrel Candle, North Wood Dreams, Fibers & Nature, Flutterby Flowers, Charlotte's Charm, Middleburg Essentials

That's the general roster, not a confirmed lineup for any one week. The market posts each Wednesday's vendors on its Facebook page, so check there before heading over for a particular vendor on closing night. Janet Emma Garbe curates the free, rotating live music. Bring a lawn chair or a picnic blanket. The market asks for that every week.

Thursday Morning, the Showgrounds Fill for the Third Time This Fall

The WIHS Regional is the third show at Salem Farm in about a month. The Middleburg Classic ran September 16 to 20, and the Piedmont Jumper Classic followed September 24 to 27. What sets October's show apart is where it sends people next.

The Washington International Horse Show runs the WIHS Regional, and the release announcing the 2026 prize list puts the reason for its timing in a single heading: "The Road to WIHS Runs Through Virginia." Grand champions in the Children's and Adult Hunter, Junior and Amateur Jumper, and each Pony Jumper section qualify automatically for the WIHS Championships. Top finishers in the WIHS Regional Hunter and Regional Pony Hunter divisions qualify for those divisions' finals at the International. A rider who wins a championship in Upperville on Sunday afternoon could be competing at The Show Place Arena at Prince George's Equestrian Center within days.

The show is recognized by US Equestrian, the United States Hunter Jumper Association, the Virginia Horse Shows Association, and the Maryland Horse Shows Association. The Peterson Fellows Family is new as presenting sponsor this year, and Taylor Harris Insurance Services joins as a new sponsor.

How the Four Days Build

The tentative schedule starts at 8 a.m. every day, and the stakes rise as the week goes on.

  1. Thursday, October 15. Hunter and jumper classes in Salem 2, Salem 3, and the Grand Prix Arena.
  2. Friday, October 16. Adult amateur and other hunter divisions, medal classes, jumpers, and pony jumpers.
  3. Saturday, October 17. The MHSA Gittings Horsemanship Finals, plus children's and pony hunters and jumper classes.
  4. Sunday, October 18. The USHJA Zone 3 Hunter and Jumper Championships, the USHJA Hunt & Go Team Challenge, and the 2026 MHSA Pony Hunter Seat Finals.

Sunday is the day to circle. The Zone 3 Championship has only 20 invitations per section, so the riders in the ring earned their places over the whole season. Several additions are new for 2026: Pony Jumpers with a WIHS qualifier, Take2 Thoroughbred Jumpers, the THIS National Children's Medal qualifier, and both Sunday events, the Hunt & Go and the Pony Hunter Seat Finals.

Before you plan a visit, know what the show's pages leave out. The official 2026 WIHS Regional pages don't say whether spectator admission is free or describe parking. They mention a Vendor Row and daily hospitality but don't name any food vendors. The free daytime admission listed in the WIHS FAQ applies to the October 19 to 25 show in Upper Marlboro, not the Upperville show. Check with the show office directly before you go, since the schedule is still marked tentative.

The Third Address Has New Owners This Fall

Hunter's Head Tavern, at the other end of that mile, is going into its first fall show season under new ownership. FauquierNow reported on March 16 that Noel and Alannah Sweeney, owners of the adjacent Trinity Farm, bought the property in late 2025 "with a desire to preserve the restaurant as a centerpiece of the community." The building started as a 1750 log cabin, known as the Old Carr House, and is one of the oldest homes in the region. The tavern once served products from Ayrshire Farm. The paper reported that a separate sale of most of the farm means the two are no longer connected.

The new owners named master sommelier Jarad Slipp, who also oversees Tremolo Bar and Knead Wine in Middleburg, as the tavern's operator. In the release FauquierNow reported, he said:

"It was important to me that we retain the name and vibe of such an iconic spot. The menu will continue to lean heavily on British Pub food, just at a level rarely seen stateside."

Former owner Sandy Lerner said in the release that keeping the pub with the family next door means "it's going to stay local for the community." In show week, that local tavern sits on the same road as an event drawing competitors from across the region.

The Rest of the Month Around That Mile

The Upperville week falls between two of the region's best-known steeplechase days, and most of the month's other dates are within a short drive:

  • Saturday, October 10: The Virginia Fall Races at Glenwood Park, 36787 Glenwood Park Lane, Middleburg, at 12:30 p.m., with a Family Fun Fair and Vendor Village.
  • Sunday, October 11: Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville starts its fall parish study of Bonhoeffer's Life Together. Small groups meet in parishioners' homes for five weeks, through November 15.
  • Saturday, October 17: Kinloch Farm's third annual Reach the Roots farm tour in The Plains, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It's on the same day as the Gittings Finals at Salem Farm.
  • Friday, October 23: The first Taste of Gold Cup, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Great Meadow, benefiting the Fauquier Free Clinic.
  • Saturday, October 24: The International Gold Cup at Great Meadow, 5089 Old Tavern Road, The Plains.

Seen together, the Upperville stretch runs two Wednesday evenings of local vendors and a seed-saving workshop, then four days of qualifying classes for an international show, all on one road. The pivot comes on the night of October 14.
